Now we are going to build on our own stories by adding the "story of us" and "story of now" to your "story of self" to create the story of your community and it's call to action.

A “story of us” communicates why our community in particular is called to act, and why we in particular have the capacity to lead.

A “story of now” communicates the urgent challenge we are called upon to face now.

Again, in any format that you would like, you will post on your neighborhood padlet to this time tell the story of your community.

You can tell the story through video recording, audio recording with pictures, song, poetry, written word with art, a poster, example social media post, or any format that you prefer.

  1. Before deciding how you want to share the story of your community, we suggest you write it down in a notebook or on your phone first so you can think about what words to use and how to tell it.
    • Re-share your story of self from activity 303 at the beginning and then use the questions to create the call to action for your community:
      • Why are you capable of leading change on this issue?
      • Why should other members of your community also care about it and get involved? What affect does it have on your community and why?
      • What can they do to help? List clear and simple steps they can take.
      • What are you doing to address it now?
      • Why it is urgent, or important to not wait, to take action now?
  2. Choose what format you want to share the story of your community call to action.
    • On padlet, select the three dots (...) on the bottom right corner of your post to see more options for how you can create and submit your story. A few options you have but are not limited to are:
      • Film: record video from your device camera
      • Voice: record audio from your device microphone
      • Upload and Link: you are welcome to use other tools to create your story then upload or link it to your post
  3. Create a post with the community story on your neighborhood Padlet embedded below or by going to the link

Discussion:

  1. How can stories change or broaden perspectives?
  2. How can stories encourage, motivate, or inspire action?
  3. & Comment on Padlet for each story that you listen to or read. Write on at least 2 posts how you would respond to their call of action if you were a member of their community and why.

      example comment on padlet post:

I would join you in volunteering at the community garden twice a month since it is a low time commitment and your story showed me how much of an impact it can have on teaching younger kids about good nutrition especially now when there is a shortage of healthy produce in the neighborhood.

I would Join you in helping with a "teaching refugee girls how to code" campaign since it will be online and I will have the capacity to support through contributing my coding skills.

      or

I would not join you in building a food bank because it would cost too much money and time. It is also not necessary because there already is a food bank in the neighborhood so I suggest working with them and building off existing work to save time and money.

We hope your stories inspire many people to listen to your innovative and important ideas and motivates them to join you in creating meaningful change in your community.
